The Jetty Restaurant Namibia

The restaurant on the jetty in Walvis Bay Namibia

Welcome to The Raft Restaurant, the premier social spot in Walvis Bay Namibia. The Raft was built around 15 years ago form wood that was previously used in an old jetty used for the fishing industry.

It now has its own jetty at the end of which is the restaurant. The floors are made from the old jetty planks which are an extremely heavy type of wood called Balau.
This is a tropical hard-wood which comes from the family of Dipterocarpaceae. It is seriously loaded with resins and rich tropical oils which makes it ideal for use in construction of structures that will be in the sea, as is the  jetty restaurant in Walvis Bay Namibia.

It is a very tightly grained dense wood, and is ideal for use in the construction of the jetty restaurant Namibia.
It has a texture which is very fine and also very even. Balau has been used for building ships for hundreds of years, as well as being used in heavy construction and furnitue of the heavy duty variety.
It is very heavy indeed, a short piece of the section used in the construction of the floor of the Raft Restaurant is very difficult for one person to lift. Because of the presence of the resin and oil, it is extremely resistant to weather and is very strong.

The species is one that is very responsibly managed and unlike some other species, notably, Tectona, Balaui has not (yet) experienced any overpricing.

It is a fairly accurate statement that deciduous trees are classed as hard woods, and evergreen trees are classed as soft woods. The name of the wood is not strictly to do with how hard or soft the wood is, for example, Balsa wood, which as we all know is a very soft wood, is actually classed as a hard wood.

Angiosperms is the group in which hard woods belong, their seeds are covered in either a nut or some kind of fruit. Gymnosperms is the group name of soft woods, their seeds fall from the tree with no covering, some trees like pine trees, have their mature seeds blown by the wind, which results in a wider area being covered by the seeds.

At The Raft Restaurant, you will experience good food, good service and a lively  informal atmosphere. It is the number one spot at the cost of Namibia for sundowners, lunch, dinner or just a few beers.

It is in Walvis Bay lagoon, and is the iconic building of Walvis Bay. Dolphins are very often seen around the restaurant and are very entertaining during lunch. It is a very popular venue for tour operators, who bring their groups for lunch and dinner. It has a very handy car park at the end of the jetty where the tour bus can easily park.

The next time you are in the vicinity of Walvis Bay, drop by for a cold one or a bite to eat.

If you are in Namibia you need to visit the Raft
I love the Raft,  I have been there about a dozen times over the last 2 years and always look forward to coming back.  Great staff, great manager and tonight I finally met the owner Sarah who is just lovely.   I love this place, if you are in Namibia then you need to come to the Raft, Its the best place to eat in town. I recommend it to everyone I know.  The food is excellent, the view is spectacular, its a great place to spend a night with your family or freinds.  I have been here about a dozen times over the past couple of years and always look forward to coming back.  If I had one complaint it would have to be - the Crocodile was off the menu...
