The Lagoon, Walvis Bay, Namibia

The Raft Restaurant In Walvis Bay Lagoon Namibia

 With triple aspect, floor to ceiling windows to the East, South and West the Main Restaurant covers a vast area seating 165 guests and offering fabulous views over Walvis Bay Lagoon. Amazingly, despite the high ceilings and enhanced by the unusual and interesting shape of the whole area, the feeling is amazingly cozy and many guests remark on the great ambiance they have experienced throughout their meal.

The use of bright, yet warm, yellows and oranges on the walls contrasts perfectly with the old jetty poles scarred by mussels and limpets, which rise through the floor and out through the roof. The floor itself is made from the original Walvis Bay jetty gangway planks and although not too friendly for stilettos (tee hee) and a napkin challenge to those who prefer their tables not to rock, it adds to the wonderful acoustics that emanate from the timber building.

In keeping with the rustic, oceangoing/wood ship feel, the tables and chairs are hand-made locally from natural wood and the chairs have leather seats upholstered in natural coloured hides. The friendly and knowledgeable staff welcome guests equally, in their ‘Glad Rags’ for a special occasion, or their Khaki shorts fresh out of their suitcase at the end or start of a safari.

‘Variety is the spice of life’ and there is no shortage of that on the

À La Carte Menu at The Raft.

Starters include the highly popular; ‘Three Cheese & Fresh Garlic Prawns’, along with more unusual dishes such as ; ‘Balinese Baby Octopus Samoosas’, ‘Kusaki Kingklip’ for sushi lovers, ‘Warthog Remouladen’ and ‘Ostrich Carpaccio’ .

There is an interesting selection of Healthy Salads and Tasty Pastas on offer, while Fish Dishes include; ‘Marinated Swordfish Brochette’, ‘Creamed Coconut Kabeljou’, ‘Steenbras Trapanesa’ and a speciality of the house ideal for those who are not familiar with the local fish – ‘Fish trio’ which consists of fillets of Monkfish, Butterfish and Kingklip, labelled so that you know which one you like best!

Mouthwatering Shellfish dishes boast;

‘The Proper Prawn Frenzy’ - a whole kilo of Giant Prawns,

‘Luxurious Grilled Rock Lobster’, and

the ‘Seafood Platter’ – a selection of Crayfish, Tiger prawns, Mussels, Oysters, Scallops, Hake, Calamari & Crab Claws – a real feast!!

Meat dishes star Prime Local Cuts straight from the butchers block to the Open Flame Grill simply basted with Olive Oil and sprinkled with Sea Salt for you to enjoy the full natural flavours. Choose from; Oryx, Kudu, Crocodile, Ostrich, Zebra (when available) and of course tasty Namibian Beef.

On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays we also serve a show stopping ‘Eisbein’ - whole Pork knuckle with crispy crackling and meat so soft it falls off the bone, served on a pile of creamy Mashed Potato with Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut and a delicious Home made Apple Sauce spiked with Apple Cider – yum yummo!!!!

House Specialities include a delicious ‘Maharaja Mutton Curry’ – fit for an Indian Prince, ‘Carpet Bagger Sirloin Steak’ – stuffed with Smoked Mussels and Melted Cheese and ‘Royal Chicken À La Raft’ – not for the faint hearted.

There’s really something for everyone at The Raft Restaurant in Walvis Bay lagoon Namibia including a Kiddies Menu with smaller portions and don’t miss out on the tempting Desserts  which include

 ‘Little Squidgy Date Pudding with Sticky Toffee Pecan Sauce’ – to die for, ‘Amarula Bokka Glory’ - if you’re in the mood for a real blow-out and

‘Banoffee Pie’ – a firm favourite.

To compliment the Desserts there is also a small selection of excellent Dessert Wines and don’t forget the original Southern Africa concoction - ‘Dom Pedro’ made with your choice of Liqueur – think ‘grown up frozen milkshake’ made with highest quality Vanilla Ice Cream – a perfect round off to a perfect meal!!!!

 What they say about us;

If you are in Namibia you need to visit the Raft
I love the Raft,  I have been there about a dozen times over the last 2 years and always look forward to coming back.  Great staff, great manager and tonight I finally met the owner Sarah who is just lovely.   I love this place, if you are in Namibia then you need to come to the Raft, Its the best place to eat in town. I recommend it to everyone I know.  The food is excellent, the view is spectacular, its a great place to spend a night with your family or freinds.  I have been here about a dozen times over the past couple of years and always look forward to coming back.  If I had one complaint it would have to be - the Crocodile was off the menu... (sorry, but I do love the Bushmans Platter with the Crocodile)  Thank you to you all, I look forward coming back next week before returning to the UK.  David Carroll Director Purple Pear Creations Web Design Ltd UK  PS Get yourself a Facebook page so we can all like everything about the Raft...
